Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) is expected to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of nursing care documentation. However, its implementation in practice is often affected by nurses’ high workload. An imbalanced workload may reduce the quality of documentation, ultimately impacting the overall quality of nursing care services. Objective: To describe nurses’ workload in relation to the implementation of nursing care documentation using the EMR method at Labuang Baji General Hospital, Makassar. Method: This study employed a descriptive observational design with a survey approach. Data were collected using a standardized questionnaire measuring workload and EMR documentation performance. A total of 39 inpatient nurses were selected using simple random sampling. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequency distribution and percentage. Result: Most nurses reported a “moderate” workload (87.2%), while 12.8% reported a “less optimal” workload. Contributing factors included the number of patients, case complexity, limited resources, and working hours. EMR implementation was perceived to facilitate workload management and improve productivity; however, challenges remained, such as inadequate training, limited technical support, and network issues. Conclusion: Nurses’ workload affects the optimal implementation of EMR documentation. Efforts to manage workload, enhance competencies through training, and provide ongoing technical support are essential to maximize EMR’s potential in supporting nursing care quality.
